Cake is the Devil
A lot of people have been asking me recently about a certain away message I put up sometimes. I'll write everything about it here and then I won't have to go on a 40-minute monologue to them anymore; I can just point them to this page.

The lead singer of Cake is, in reality, Lucifer. My friend Dave and I deduced this by analyzing the lyrics to their songs. Surprisingly many, if not most, of Cake's songs are written about the relationship between God and the Devil. They are, without fail, also all from Satan's point of view. He appears to be a penitent Devil, wishing mainly to return to heaven. I will provide analysis below of the lyrics that are most representative of this theory. You will see that there are many of them, spreading over all of Cake's released albums.

I. Identity

Some songs provide little more than a simple proof of identity. These include "Jesus Wrote a Blank Check," "Opera Singer," "Sheep Go To Heaven," and "Long Line of Cars," with some almost jocular support from "Satan is My Motor."

Opera Singer:
"...Some people they call me monster
Some people they call me saint
My talent feeds my darker side
Yet no one will complain...

...I am an opera singer
I will sing when you're all dead
I sing the mountains crumbling apart
I sing what can't be said

I am an opera singer
I sing in foreign lands
Most people seem to know my name
Or at least know who I am"

Christians call him a monster, but Satanists worship him. His "talent" was instrumental in the Fall, because he thought himself enough of a hotshot to take on God. He will outlast any mortal, of course, singing when we're all dead and when the mountains turn to dust. Most people know who Lucifer is, but even if they don't know that name, of course they're aware of the figure Christians call the Devil.

Jesus Wrote a Blank Check:
"...But if I had to choose a number,
I'd want it to be number one.
I don't want to be number two..."

exemplary of the Sin of Pride, cause of the Fall from Heaven.

"...still I build my towers high
I watch them pierce the blue blue sky,
Oh still I wallow in the mire.
Still I burn this Earth in fire!"

Lucifer has dreams, of course, he "builds his towers high," attempting to rival Heaven if he can't reenter it. But in the end he still knows himself to "wallow in the mire" compared to his prior existence at the right hand of God. And he takes his anger out on the world, burning "this Earth in fire."

Sheep Go To Heaven:
"...the grave digger puts on the forceps,
The stonemason does all the work,
The barber can give you a haircut,
The carpenter can take you out to lunch.

But I just want to play on my pan-pipes.
I just want to drink me some wine.
As soon as you're born you start dying,
so you might as well have a good time.

Sheep go to Heaven,
Goats go to Hell..."

This song wasn't included at first because I didn't feel it provided enough evidence. This song is more in the nature of propaganda than a direct indication of the Devil's thoughts. The first four lines quoted above are all related to death. When you die, the grave digger digs your grave, the stonemason makes your tombstone, the barber makes you presentable in your casket, and "the carpenter," or Jesus, takes your soul. But the Devil feels that since this all happens eventually anyway you might as well eat, drink, and be merry. Artistic depictions of the Devil have often given him goat horns and hooves. The pan-pipes are another link, since Dionysian tendencies are hedonistic in nature and Christianity often views pleasure-seeking to be immoral. Sheep follow a shepherd, which Jesus is often styled as; "The Lord is my shepherd..." Goats are a different sort of animal, more stubborn and generally doing what pleases them.

Long Line of Cars:
"...this long line of cars
Is trying to get through.
And this long line of cars
Is all because of you...

...From the streets of Sacramento
To the freeways of L.A.
We've got to keep this fire burning
and accept a little gray.

So this long line of cars
Is trying to break free.
And this long line of cars
Is all because of me."

This song is actually about two different lines of cars, according to the lyrics. One line of cars is "trying to get through." This line of cars is "all because of you." In the second verse, the fires are kept burning, and the line of cars "is trying to break free." This second line of cars "is all because of me." Obviously the cars are a metaphor for souls en route to Heaven and Hell. The souls going to Heaven are eagerly awaiting their turn, "trying to get through." The souls destined for Hell are fearful, chaotic, "trying to break free."

Satan is My Motor:
"...My intentions are good,
And earnest, and true,
But under My hood,
Is internal combustion power.

Satan is my motor,
Hear my motor purr.
Satan is the only one
Who seems to understand."

His intentions are good (the road to Hell is paved with good intentions, after all), but his heart is filled with a fiery rage. And of course nobody understands his good intentions; they all blame him for things that aren't his fault (from his point of view).

II. The Fall

The next set of songs is about the Fall from Heaven and Lucifer's mindset at the time, hinting at what was going through his head when he rebelled. Examples that fall into this category are: "Guitar," "Mexico," and "Pretty Pink Ribbon"

Guitar:
"Well, the way you treat me,
Like the only,
Slightly brings me down,
A lot

I don't think that I'll
Ever be the same...

If I threw my guitar...Would I
Start to regret it,
Or would I smile,
And watch it slowly fall?"

Lucifer resents God's inattention to him, the most shining of his hosts. He believes himself to be on an even footing with God and wishes to rebel, by "throwing his guitar" and stirring up trouble. Obviously the fall of the guitar parallels the Fall from Heaven.

Mexico:
"...I was bright,
But she was much brighter.
I was high,
But she was the sky...

...But I said I want you,
And you don't believe me;
You said you want me,
But I've got my doubts."

Lucifer shines brightly, but still pales beside God. Jealousy and pride gnaw at him until he could no longer hear God's voice speaking love to him.

Pretty Pink Ribbon:
"Without the pretty pink ribbon
You'd end up just like me.
Without the pretty pink ribbon
You'd float down to the sea...

...Your muscles would bulge underground
Your demons would all be around.
Without the pretty pink ribbon
You'd end up just like me...

...Without the pretty pink ribbon
You would lift this steaming herd
You would kill all the sick ones
You would bury them deep in the earth..."

Satan feels that but for a stroke of fate, his place and God's could easily be exchanged. God would be underground with his demons, burying evil souls (sick members of the herd) "deep in the earth," the traditional location of hell.

III. The Penitent Devil

Cake has many songs that show Satan's softer side, as it were. He seems to truly regret his previous actions, and wishes he could turn from his path and return to Heaven. Some examples are "Mr. Mastodon Farm," "Hem of Your Garment," and "Where Would I Be?"

Mr. Mastodon Farm:
"You see birds fall from the window ledge above mine.
Then they flap their wings at the last second.
I can see their dead weight
Just dropping like stones,
Or small loaves of bread...

...Now due to a construct in my mind
That makes their falling and their flight
Symbolic of my entire existence,
It becomes important for me
To get up and see
Their last second curves toward flight.
It's almost as if my life will fall
Unless I see their ascent.

Mr. Mastodon Farm,
Mr. Mastodon Farm,
Cuts swatches out of all material."

The birds falling like stones or "small loaves of bread" (biblical reference) obviously bring up some bad memories for Mr. Meteorite Himself. The symbolism of watching them spread their wings and rise back to the sky must be heartbreaking for him. He desperately wants back into Heaven - he can't get the grandeur of the Throne out of his mind. This is his personal message to God, the titular subject of the song. Who else herded mastodons, and could be said to cut swatches out of all material?

Where Would I Be?
"I've been waiting for so long
I've been hoping your love's not gone...

...You have been cloudy, distant, dark
I'm thinking of Noah and the ark.

Where would I be without your love?
Where would I be without your arms around me?"

Lucifer has been hoping that he can be forgiven. He has been waiting a very long time for forgiveness, against the distant, personally felt enmity of God. His thinking of Noah and the Ark is very telling, for both the Biblical reference, and also for the story itself. The rainstorm was God's punishment, much like casting Lucifer down from Heaven was. But at the end of the storm was a raindow, a covenant from God that he would never be so harsh in his judgement again. Satan would reflect on this story and see hope that the end of his suffering might be at hand any day. And where is he really, without God's love?

Hem of Your Garment:
"I am intrinsically no good
I have a heart that's made of wood...

...I have no love but only goals;
How very empty is my soul.
It is a soul that feels no thrill,
A soul that could easily kill.
And I'm not fit to touch
The hem of your garment"

This is Satan at his most vulnerable. He is certainly penitent for his actions. He makes a form here almost like that of a Catholic presenting himself for the rite of confession. He talks about all the reasons why he is unworthy of being allowed back into Heaven, essentially throwing himself on the mercy of God. Satan feels unworthy to merely touch the hem of God's garment.

IV. The Angry Devil

The last set of songs by Cake are written in moments of anger. Whenever we are feeling sorrow because of a relationship with another person, there are times when the mood swings and we are brought to be angry with that person. These songs were written to express Satan's thoughts during the times when he feels most angry with God. Some of them are: "You Part the Waters," "Sad Songs," and "Friend is a Four Letter Word."

You Part the Waters:
"You part the waters,
The same ones that I'm drowning in.
You lead your casual slaughters,
And I'm the one who helps you win...

...You part the waters,
The same ones that I'm thirsty for.
You invite your friends to tea,
But when it's me you lock the door..."

Parting the waters is another Biblical reference, ensuring the listener knows that this song is addressed directly to God. The Crusades might be an example of a "casual slaughter" that Satan ultimately helped win (by corrupting the crusaders into raiding Constantinople and slaughtering the Knights Templar). Satan of course is locked out of Heaven, unable to take tea there.

Sad Songs:
"I'm writing a song all about you.
A true song as real as my tears.
But you've no need to fear it
Cause no one will hear it...

...I'll tell all about how you cheated.
I'd like for the whole world to hear.
I'd like to get even
With you cause you're leavin'...

...It's a good thing that I'm not a star.
You don't know how lucky you are.
Though my record may say it,
No one will play it.
Sad songs and waltzes aren't selling this year."

Lucifer has written many songs about God, as we have seen previously. He would like to write a song that shows why precisely he rebelled, what he thinks went wrong in his relationship with God, but he is "not a star," as we saw in the song "Mexico" earlier; he doesn't shine as brightly as God and cannot make his words heard as well, so there is no point in writing his sad song.

Friend is a Four Letter Word:
"To me, coming from you,
Friend is a four letter word.
End is the only part of the word
That I heard...

...When I go fishing for the words
I am wishing you would say to me,
I'm really only praying
That the words you'll soon be saying
Might betray the way you feel about me,

But to me, coming from you,
Friend is a four letter word. "

If Satan were to pray he would ask that he would hear a message of forgiveness. However, Satan thinks the relationship between him and God is well and truly over, and feels that the only thing he is able to hear is the word "End". Interestingly IHVH, the name of God, is four letters long. This may be another clue - going from working closely with God to being cast down for rebellion is a sad state of affairs.

V. Supporting Evidence

Trumpets:
Cake uses trumpets in a lot of songs. Brass instruments were banned from being played in churches early on, because their players were thought to be possessed by Lucifer. In several songs, including "Long Line of Cars," that express a duality of the two sides, the trumpets come in during the part that refers to Satan.

Ok, I hope you've enjoyed reading this. It's been floating around my head for a couple of years now, ever since a conversation I had with Dave one day. I'm glad it has finally been codified, and I'm glad to see how long it is even not including some of the songs we saw as evidence for the theory.

I'm sure somewhere in the myriad of replies you've recieved from this entry you have also recieved the evidence- to go along with the song "You Part the Waters"-
You part the waters,
The same ones that I'm thirsty for"
.... the story in John 4 (vs:7-15) about Jesus' water quenching eternal thirst...

if you hadn't I just thought I'd add...
Thanks for the entry, its obviously amazing.

Man I hope this site is just some made up crap that's not to be taken seriously. If so, man, you need to get a woman or something

Oh yeah, did you know if you play brittany spears latest record backward she says that she's the devil!!! (give me a freaking break)

Cake is the epitamy of us Americans who are very opinionated. John McCrea is a damn genius - he speaks of things so deep in his music that not even his most dedicated fans (such as myself) can pick up on. They are the only band I know of who's originality and music can move people into deep thoughts. Yes, I've contemplated some of the things you spoke of, but like your bible, it can be interpreted in many different ways. Even IF McCrea was a 'satanist', I'd like to tell you that not all satanists believe in the devil, they don't believe he exists at all: McCreas Music does walk the fine line of a Satanists mantra (as far as fending for yourself), but you as for you and your critique of him, you cannot label him one or another. That is up to him, and we as fans are here to come up with our own meanings. I've been a CAKE fan since I heard their first album in '95. I've had PLENTY of time to think about their music and meanings, and I'm still not clear on all of it. That's what's so grand about them!! They make you think; and I'll be the first to admit, I do live by the imfamous line, "As soon as you're born you start dying, so you might as well have a good time".
Cake is all about taking life for what it is, don't let anything stop you on your way. You control your destiny. Things like these are the reasons why so many people like them.
I don't think you even come close to catching their quirky sense of humor. Their recent album Pressure Chief: "...and the muscular cyborg gernman dudes dance with sexy frech candiens, while the over weight americans wear their patriotic jump suits" - It's funny yes, but can you see what he's saying about americans? The not-so-funny truth. Think about it.

Cake is a wonderful band with amazing lyrics that promotes thought from it's listeners, not a one-way train of thought most bands give you. Thank you CAKE

Holy Moly... I too was redirected to this lj. Nice work. I am a huge Cake fan, and though I recognized how often the theme of religion comes up in their lyrics, I never really associated Cake with Satan... so much as they are making commentary on religion from whichever viewpoint they like. Often, I think they take a cynical view of it, instead embracing independent thought and the basic human tendency to not be perfect. Either way, I enjoyed your post. Interesting, if not irrational. :)

About the sheep go to heaven thing... its from the Bible (not sure if anyone else already wrote that). It is the separation between the forgiven and the cursed, probably based on the submissive sheep versus stubborn goat thing you'd mentioned. From Matthew 25:

32 Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate them one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats, 33 and he will place the sheep at his right hand, but the goats at the left. 34 Then the King will say to those at his right hand, 'Come, O blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; ... 41 Then he will say to those at his left hand, 'Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels;

I'm assuming you're a Christian. That's all good, 'cause I am, too. But you're going a bit overboard with this "Cake is the devil" thing. Cake is one of the most ingenious bands ever to bring music to this world. Don't diss them just because you have too much spare time to look into these things. And don't diss trumpets. They rock. Not as much as trombones, but they rock nonetheless. ...Cake. The devil. It's laughable. :) Have a nice day.

What the Fuck!!

Dude yes I agree, some songs can be in REFERENCE to satan. But you seriously pulled some of that shit out of left field. Come on, couldn't "hem of your garment" "sad songs", "where would I be", "pretty pink ribbon", and "mexico" be about a guy and his ex girlfriend or current girlfriend. Could "Blank check", "you part the waters" actually be happy heavenly songs. Guitar could be about a man throwing away his sins, maybe he would regret it... no, he is better off without them. Don't come after CAKE. They are better people that you. And by the way, trumpets sound in heaven, to announce the presence of a higher being, aka: angels, saints, arc angels, GOD. Great supporting evidence. ASS FUCKER! Its your kind that probably thinks France was right in not going to war. Its you bitches that said let go to the UN after 9/11. I hope you burn in HELL you low down dirty ASS FUCKER!!!!!!!! By the way, if these are all such bad songs, where the FUCK is "Fashion Nugget." That song says FUCK every other word. If that ain't satanic, well FUCK off ASS FUCKER.

Something New and Refreshing...
[info]me_d_geek
2005-04-22 11:19 pm UTC (link)
Well first let me say 'Nice Job' as you have seemed to have created quite a stir. And an interesting one at that. I like the way you were able to find a common thread throughout many of the songs and lyrical content to support your point. You should seriously consider getting into law, investment banking, or real estate. Any profession that engages in negotiations and persuasion would be right up your alley... Just look at some of the posts (I had to skip to the end, I just got tired of reading them all).

I did 'get' the gist of your composition, however I think after reading many of the posts, there are still some readers left clueless by your passage.

I am only somewhat familiar with Cake, so my opinion would be that John has taken a very interesting position metaphorically to explain and express whatever was on his mind during each writing session. However, unless he is planning on taking a seat at the head of the UN (United Nations) sometime in the future, then all you Cake fans can feel relieved that he's not the anti-christ. I also no nothing of his descendants, but the anti-christ will be an Assyrian (meaning of Russian descent/heritage), so someone should give John a call and ask him about his Mom and Pop.

On the other hand, a little theology and demonology will reveal to you that Satan's original body was created with musical instruments in it and when he moved it made sounds in the heavens. I have also seen some interesting theories about Satan teaching Cane how to build and play musical instruments. Some of this may have been circumstantial, but interesting never-the-less. And lets not forget what Cane, the first born son of Adam and Eve did! Interesting how music may have a link right back to the beginning of man.

Now I know some of you are starting to cringe and are waiting for me say some stereotypical comment about how rock and roll is devil music. Actually no. I personally think that has to be one of the most ignorant religious arguments to date... well that and all this new age stuff about Christ being an alien, or the church of scientology. Steven Hawkings is an idiot and did such a bad job with his first book, that he had to write a second book to try and plug up all the holes in the first.

Then you can get into other religions with all kinds of wacky cult-ish activity. Evolution as well. Ok, if the earth really is as old as you claim, Explain the following:

1 Why does the Colorado river flow West when it would have had to make a 2500+ foot ascent across the desert? I thought water flowed downhill (Oh yeah, Newton hadn't discovered the law of gravity yet so it didn't apply, right?)

2 Mimicry in nature

3 Niagara Falls starting point. It is proven that Niagara Falls moves 4 to 7 feet per year up stream. This means that best case you have an 8000 year distance to the ocean.

4 Sediment in the ocean. Oceanographers agree that there is only enough mud and sediment to account for at best 70,000 years of decomposition.

5 sediment on the moon. Well, Nasa was all worried about Armstrong's first steps and if he would sink into all the space dust on the moon. Turns out that Scientists say there is only enough space dust to account for about 180,000 years.

6 North pole and Magnetic North of the earth are 23 degrees off center. Geesh, how could this have happened?

OK, so most of you are really bored with my carrying on, but wait, I am getting to a point.

My impression in theory is John may see many of the problems in the world today and may very well also realize they stem from false beliefs, lies, cults, etc. I theorize that maybe he is using something as preposterous as Satan for a subject center-point for his metaphors in effort to... how should we say... call a spade a spade. Never the less, metaphors are more of an instrument of expression. The meaning can be somewhat open to interpretation and influence.... Much like pointing a gun at a target for practice or squeezing off a cap in your neighbor because you had a bad day and he said something that pushed you over the top. It all about the interpretation with metaphors...

So again I commend the Author in the consistency of his interpretation Maybe Cake should change their name to DevilCake :-)

I'm glad you get my "message" (just trying to be funny, man). But I'm a little confused by your "talking points" there.

Well, first I don't understand your jab at Steven Hawking, but we'll let that slide for a sec.

1) Colorado River flowing west (uphill?)
I don't really understand what you're talking about here. Water doesn't flow uphill. It may collect in pools and fill a crater or valley to the brim (we call these "lakes") then spill over into a stream on the other side so that the river continues. Alternatively, if it strikes a mountain or rocky surface moving quickly, after years it may bore a hole in the face of the cliff due to erosion.

2) Mimicry in nature: what about it? Mockingbirds imitate sounds that other animals make as part of a mating ritual. The ones with the most interesting noises get the babes.

3) I don't have time to check your 3 to 7 feet number, but it sounds plausible. I don't understand why you think that makes waterfalls an impossibility. All waterfalls trend toward a gentle downhill slope due to erosion. Eventually instead of a giant cascade, the cliff will have washed away and there will be only a downhill stream where the great fall is now.

4) This is just total bullshit. I want to see your sources on this.

5) Again, no time to google, but "space dust"? The only experimental evidence we have to extrapolate the accumulation of "space dust" from would BE our moon landing and mars lander missions. I don't recall one of the objectives of the Mars rovers currently up there being "to discover the mystery behind the slower than expected accumulation of space dust on the moon" so I'm going to have to classify this one as bullshit as well.

6) What the fuck are you even talking about? The "true pole" is the axis of rotation about which the Earth spins. The magnetic pole is caused by the irregularity of the magnetic field surrounding the Earth. They are two ENTIRELY SEPARATE THINGS.

Listen people obviously this freak is a biblehugger and has no life i saw cake recently and they were great. There was no Satan worshiping or anything related to religion. They write music that make people feel happy and good not shit that brain washes you, like other bands such as slipknot and other crazy shit. When they played "Sheep Go To Heavan" he had us sing "Sheep go to heavan goats go to Hell" and he said "People if your christian it is alright to say this because it is a METAPHOR!" Also I have noticed that Slipknots symbol is a goat so why dont you rag on them. Quit wasting your time because you willl never convince any CAKE fan that they are a stanist for listening to there music. So get off your ass and go buy CAKE'S new album (pressure Chief) this time actually listen to it, dont study it so then you will find out that CAKE is not a Satan worshiping band. They ARE the Best Band!
GET OVER IT YOU FRIGGING LOONIE
Wes (#1 Cake Fan)
P.S. Loose the mohawk cause it looks terrible......

I think that cake is just trying to make people think and realize how absurb and judgemental our society is. People automatically label them as "evil", exactly proving their point. oh yeah..."Cake uses trumpets in a lot of songs." this is because they have a trumpet player.

Recent Concert

I recently saw CAKE this past weekend in Kentucky/Cincinnati. While I have been to 3 CAKE concerts now, this is the first I've been to since reading this post. I do not necessarily agree with anything written in the original post, however I do find it interesting to participate in a forum with so many CAKE fans. I found two parts of the concert interesting/funny in reference to this topic... John was sick at this concert, so there was an awful lot of audience participation (to give his throat a rest, I assume) At the end of "Satan is my Motor" he had the crowd chanting "Satan is my Motor" over and over... He seemed to just think it was hilarious... His comment was "Wow, this crowd sounds conflicted... It's OK, you can say it if you're Christian". This does not necessarily make him a Satanist, but it was kind of funny I thought... Another story that I found funny was before playing "Pentagram", John went on a tangent of men going to war and women staying here in the states, etc... Then he says "However, this (war) is not the biggest problem we face here in America... This next song deals with that (problem)..." Then the band played "Pentagram". Again, I find this ironic, I'm not sure what his comments mean... A question I wondered is if this string of posts could have influenced that comment, or if there is a general thought in the public that CAKE has satanic meanings in their music... Or if CAKE just finds it ridiculous that people would worry about such silly things at a time where the country is at war and there are so many bad things happening to the environment, etc... Any thoughts?

Well, I hope that they thought this whole thing was funny and they were just making jokes playing off of it.

That's what it sounds like to me. :)

Actually, you could make an argument for Pentagram being about the underlying cause of people going to war and dying; the idea of blindly following leaders/trends/whatever until you're in too deep and don't know how to get out.

I know that most people don't read Plays, but just to let all the Cake fans know and maybe the author of this the line from the Cake song "Sheep Go To Heaven": "The grave Digger puts on the forceps"

Is taken from a play by Samuel Beckett, "Waiting For Godot"
It can be considered a play that really turned the tides for modern drama and brought us into what is considered drama that we view today. Here is the line from the play:

"Vladimir: Astride of a grave and a difficult birth. Down in the hole, lingeringly, the grave digger puts on the forceps. We have time to grow old. The air is full of our cries. (He listens.) But habit is a great deadener. (He looks again at Estragon.) At me too someone is looking, of me too someone is saying, He is sleeping, he knows nothing, let him sleep on."

Just thought I would throw that out.

Donovan.

What was the away message you would put up? Was it just "Cake is evil"?

I found this through the cake website and was very amused at the thought of John McCrea and the rest of Cake discovering this.

It just said "Cake is the musical incarnation of the Devil" -- now it says "Cake is the musical incarnation of the Devil, ask me how!" and it's a link to this page :P

It made people curious at first (which is what I meant it to do, I guess) but then when I started to explain it to them they kept asking for more details so I ended up giving this 20 minutes or more speech over AIM. That and most people were like "that's hilarious, you should make a crazy website about it" so I did the next best thing and put it in my lj. :P

eh, not so much as all that - it just takes up a lot of space written down. :P

Dave is mostly to credit for the idea, I think (hard to recall exactly, it was a couple of years ago we had this conversation). It just became more elaborate as time passed and every once in a while when we were in the car listening to Motorcade of Generosity or whatever, going "hey, I think this song fits too!"

....you should check out The Old Scratch Revival Singers. The album is 'Oh, Didn't He Ramble'. I think you'd like it. I see what you're saying exactly.
